In Their Own Words:

Survey completed by Kathy Haberer 4/06:

Does your school have any specialized services - for instance, a facilitated support group, organizational support, communication and advocacy with professors, or support for students to have work experience - for students with Asperger Syndrome and related conditions, such as Autism or Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified?

"Two programs that include these conditions described on brochure."

From brochure: "The Supported College Transition Program (SCT) was designed for students with little mainstreaming experience in high school and with the academic preparation that indicates they can be successful in accommodated sections of college developmental courses (Communications 100 and Math 111) with the additional support provided by a Life Skills class. SCT courses are college credit courses which are eligible for federal and state financial aid.

"College for Life: For those students who have had few inclusive experiences in high school, the College for Life program provides courses that continue the educational experience and also provides social growth opportunities on a college campus. College for Life courses are continuing education, non-credit courses which are not eligible for financial aid or support from the Division of Rehabilitation Services."

Does your school offer any kind of supports that might be of help to a student with Asperger Syndrome? If so, with which student population(s) in mind were they created (for example, students with learning disabilities)? Please describe those programs and services.

"See brochure [excerpts above] for programs and services. These programs (SCT and CFL) were designed for students with various developmental disabilities and more severe LD."

Do you have any counselors or other personnel on staff with specialized training in supporting students with Asperger Syndrome or other Autism Spectrum Disorders? Please describe.

"All of our staff have had training and we plan additional training opportunities in FY07."

Do you have any counselors on staff with experience supporting social skills and facilitating social integration?

"Renee Bauer, our personal counselor, has consider[able] experience working w/ students who have cognitive disabilities in [social skills and social integration] and sex ed, also."

Are single residence hall rooms available on campus for students with Asperger Syndrome or other conditions that can lead to discomfort sharing personal space?
