In Their Own Words:

Survey completed by Susan Sullivan 5/06:

Does your school have any specialized services - for instance, a facilitated support group, organizational support, communication and advocacy with professors, or support for students to have work experience - for students with Asperger Syndrome and related conditions, such as Autism or Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified?

"Communication and advocacy w/ instructors."

Does your school offer any kind of supports that might be of help to a student with Asperger Syndrome? If so, with which student population(s) in mind were they created (for example, students with learning disabilities)? Please describe those programs and services.

"These supports are addressed by individual needs. I have a student coming in as a freshman this fall with Asperger's and will provide supports that are needed in terms of being a resource for problem solving and an avenue to assist instructors to understand his individual needs."

Do you have any counselors or other personnel on staff with specialized training in supporting students with Asperger Syndrome or other Autism Spectrum Disorders? Please describe.

"I have specialized training as I was formerly a Dir. of Special Education for a large urban school district with a support staff trained to assist students with Autism and Autism spectrum disabilities. I stay in touch with them to remain up to date."

Do you have any counselors on staff with experience supporting social skills and facilitating social integration?

"We have three advisors on our Academic Support Staff who are trained counselors. I have had experience in social skill training and share my knowledge with them and call on them when necessary. I also involve parents as a resource for training staff."

Are single residence hall rooms available on campus for students with Asperger Syndrome or other conditions that can lead to discomfort sharing personal space?

"We are a Community College with no residence halls."
