Survey completed by Hank Ottinger 3/06:
Does your school have any specialized services - for instance, a facilitated support group, organizational support, communication and advocacy with professors, or support for students to have work experience - for students with Asperger Syndrome and related conditions, such as Autism or Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified?
"Yes, a dedicated academic support program that involves study skills (class & individual), advocacy, alternate testing arrangements. We have yet to work with students who are autistic, PDD, etc."
Does your school offer any kind of supports that might be of help to a student with Asperger Syndrome? If so, with which student population(s) in mind were they created (for example, students with learning disabilities)? Please describe those programs and services.
"Westminster's program (see [above]) has been in place since 1975. It has a supportive relationship with the faculty, an absolutely crucial element in any support program. However, we're just beginning to address students with Asperger's. Challenging, but rewarding."
Do you have any counselors or other personnel on staff with specialized training in supporting students with Asperger Syndrome or other Autism Spectrum Disorders? Please describe.
"None with specialized training. On the job training? Yes, indeed."
Do you have any counselors on staff with experience supporting social skills and facilitating social integration?
"None beyond our traditional counseling program/service."
Are single residence hall rooms available on campus for students with Asperger Syndrome or other conditions that can lead to discomfort sharing personal space?
"Opportunities for single rooms exist."
